The Alligator River Guided Drive is one of the most unique experiences of the OBX Jeep Mutiny weekend… and an incredible experience in the unique coastal Carolina and barrier islands ecosystem. We encourage you to explore the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge, as well as the Pea Island and Pocosin Lakes refuges, and the Coastal North Carolina National Wildlife Refuges Gateway Visitor Center.
Tread lightly, pack out waste, follow the rules and policies, and most importantly, enjoy but respect wildlife and the refuges.
Participating in the Guided Drive
- The activity is an auto tour on gravel roads, not an off-road or recreational wheeling activity.
- The activity is a limited, permitted and guided drive for 25 vehicles, per guided drive, on the route authorized for our event.
- Participant attendance at a mandatory driver meeting prior to the activity is required.
- Participants are required to abide by federal, North Carolina, and Dare County laws, and USFWS and ARNWR rules.
- The Guided Drive is permitted through USFWS and follows USFWS and ARNWR direction, including any route restrictions, changes, or conditions in effect at the time of the event.
- OBX Jeep Mutiny, USFWS, and ARNWR may cancel or alter the activity at any time for any reason.
- Participating vehicles must be registered and insured per the respective State laws.
- Vehicle drivers must be 18 or older and have a current and valid driver’s license.

The Guided Drive is permitted for 25 vehicles per guided drive. The available spots per guided drive will be randomly allocated, from the received requests to participate.
The request acceptance period, 8/17/2026 through 8/21/2026, is closed. Submissions before 8/17/2026 or after 8/21/2026 will not be honored.

About Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge
Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge is located on the Albemarle Peninsula in eastern North Carolina. The refuge was established in 1984 to protect the rare pocosin wetlands and their associated wildlife. Pocosin wetlands grow on thick layers of peat and have stunted, shrubby vegetation. The refuge also protects swamp forest and is fringed with marsh. The vast protected area supports large populations of black bear, wintering waterfowl, river otter, and other wildlife species. In addition, the refuge is one of the only places in the world where you may see endangered red wolves in the wild.
